From a very young age, Pierre Bastien began building his own musical instruments using whatever he had at hand: toys, pulleys, gears, metronomes, or kitchen utensils. In 1986, he developed Mecanium, a mechanical orchestra made with pieces from the Meccano construction set. Since then, the Parisian has released more than 30 albums (three of them on Aphex Twin’s label, Rephlex) and has collaborated with musicians such as Pascal Comelade or Robert Wyatt and with filmmaker Pierrick Sorin. Undoubtedly, he is one of the most imaginative and unique creators in the European experimental scene, a total artist who enjoys playfully mixing the sounds of a trumpet or a viola with those of mechanical sculptures (which we can see projected). A kind of ‘mad scientist’ who can build futuristic symphonies as well as evoke ancestral traditions with a surprisingly sensual and moving music. Above all, he is a big child who has never stopped playing, and never will.
