Johannes de Silentio is one of the alter ego of Ishak Benavides, Barcelona-based composer, sound artist, DJ, and manager of the online radio TeslaFM. 19 years ago, he began his journey as a laptop electronic music composer. Under the name Lucius Works Here, he developed a harmonic and melodic facet in the vein of experimental ambient, indietronica, and minimalism. But his full entry into the world of sound art and more radical experimentation starting in 2016 led him to create another project that sets itself apart from LWH, employing different tools such as analog synthesizers, 4-track recorders, pedals, samplers, and cassettes, to advance in live improvisation. He called this project Johannes de Silentio, and at Eufònic he will present a hypnotic and repetitive piece using sustained note techniques, practices typical of ambient drone. The work is titled “If not, winter”, inspired by Anne Carson’s book that collects the unique fragments of poems by the Greek musician and poet Sappho (630 BC).
