Oros, copes, espases i bastos (Coins, Cups, Swords and Clubs) revisits a scene deeply rooted in local culture and filters it through code: endless card games played outdoors, surrounded by rush-seated chairs, wobbly tables, raised voices, barely concealed cheating and afternoons that seem to stretch on forever. Drawing from this popular imagery, Anna Carreras transforms the deck and its four suits into a work of algorithmic art that traces the passing of time, repetition and everything that happens while the game unfolds. Rather than illustrating a card game, the work breaks it apart. Cards, hands, rhythms and combinations are arranged into a visual system that accumulates gestures and durations, as if each round were leaving behind its own trace.

Created in collaboration with Gabi Gallego and with the participation of the children attending Tivissa’s summer programme, the piece takes shape as a large-scale mural that brings the visual universe of the work into public space. The result is a generative artwork that pays tribute to this collective ritual – repetitive yet never quite the same – where the game itself is just as important as the relationships, habits and ways of spending time that surround it.

Anna Carreras
