Behind the alias Hyetal, we find David Corney, a London-based musician and producer who has been shaping his distinctive vision of electronic music for over a decade with an approach that combines elements of underground dance music, ambient, and dream pop. After starting out within the techno and post-dubstep scenes of Bristol, he has been incorporating pop structures and retro-futuristic synthesizers, and has collaborated with visual artists like Riana Begum for a sound and sculpture piece at the 2022 Venice Biennale. That same year, he explored techno and shoegaze influences with the “States” EP. And now we can witness the step forward he has taken in terms of soundtrack-style dynamics with “Red Gates,” a multidisciplinary project with visuals by computer engineer and digital media artist R3N and based on a story by journalist and writer Tim Maughan. It draws inspiration from omnipresent sci-fi-like-chaos, wellness technologies, and corporate culture to delve into the memories of an imaginary protagonist, referencing the early rave scene, analog synthesizer soundtracks, post-rock, and digital experimentation.
