The return, this May, of South African artist Yugen Blakrok with the album The Illusion of Being is one of the most talked-about in recent times within the orbit of alternative hip-hop with an Afrofuturist perspective. After honing her skills as a rapper and poet in the underground of Queenstown and Johannesburg, she began working with producer and MC Kanif the Jhatmaster, founder of the independent label Iapetus Records. In 2013, she debuted with the album Return of the Astro-Goth and since then has toured with big names in hip-hop such as MC Lyte or GZA, participated in the Black Panther soundtrack (2018) with the track “Opps” (with Vince Staples and Kendrick Lamar), and has consolidated her international presence with a second album, Anima Mysterium (2019), fusing trip-hop and blues and collaborating with a hip-hop pioneer like Kool Keith. And now we will have the privilege of seeing her new musical direction come to life: more experimental and incorporating guitars, flutes, and hypnotic beats to her energetic cry of hope and rebellion against despair and cynicism.
