Lina Choi, first Québécois artist of CONFLUENCE in Catalonia
Sound artist Lina Choi from Montreal is the first participant from Quebec in the international artist residency program CONFLUENCE 2025–2027
Over the coming weeks, Lina Choi will undertake a dual residency at L’Estruch (Sabadell) and Eufònic (Terres de l’Ebre), where she will present her project, becoming the first Quebecois artist selected for the international CONFLUENCE program—an artistic exchange between Catalonia and Quebec focused on digital, visual and sound arts.
A research through the sound of water
Lina Choi’s work investigates the emotional connection between humans and water, using sounds from rivers, oceans, and rain. Inspired by Gaston Bachelard’s book L’eau et les rêves, the artist explores the symbolic and sensory dimension of this element as a vessel for memory, comfort, and unease. Her practice blends sculpture, space, and sound to create immersive and introspective experiences.
Choi’s residency will unfold in two phases: from May 15 to June 15 at L’Estruch (Sabadell), and from June 16 to July 15 in Amposta. Her project will be presented publicly on Thursday, July 10 at La Perla as part of the festival programme.
A Creative Bridge Between Catalonia and Quebec
The CONFLUENCE programme is a collaboration between Eufònic, Avatar, and Mois Multi, with the support of the Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec (CALQ). It aims to foster international research and creation residencies: three Quebec artists will travel to Catalonia, and three Catalan artists will go to Quebec to undertake residencies at Avatar and present their work at the Mois Multi festival.
A Sonic Journey with Lina Choi on La Perla at Eufònic 2025
Aboard La Perla, Lina Choi will present an intimate performance where the sound of water takes on body and memory. On this boat that sails at a contemplative pace, the artist will shape a piece that engages in dialogue with the river landscape, its murmurs and invisible reverberations. Her research into water as an emotional archive and sonic material finds a perfect natural stage here — between reflections and currents — to bring forth what often remains submerged: the poetics of memory, internal turbulence, and the echo of the liquid we all inhabited before birth. A journey not only along the river, but also inward.
